CASE TEACHING METHOD - NEW TEACHING METHOD AT TECHNICAL UNIVERSITIES

The case method is an established form of learning applied in many academic and professional learning contexts. However, its use varied dramatically with a strong focus on law, medicine and business. Its further applicability is now being realized. In the process of teaching at universities more and more efficient methodological knowledge transfer methods which would involve the students in the course of discussing a certain area of knowledge should be looked for. Currently, in most cases, the transfer of knowledge is done at the level: "the professor says - the student listens" and thus, the participation of the student in the lectures is minimal. One of the methods of activating students and at the same time, a completely different way of teaching is learning using case studies. The case study, is often understood as a method of teaching and is especially popular in teaching economics at the universities. It is a method of teaching or presenting and consists in analyzing the descriptions of selected, specific events of the field of science. It is based on the analysis of a single case, containing a detailed description thereof, which allows to draw conclusions about the causes and results of its course. At the AGH University of Science and Technology at the Faculty of Energy and Fuels, master studies MSc KIC Clean Fossil and Alternative Fuels Energy KIC InnoEnergy, the case called "Green Current - Poland's adventure with biomass' THE IMPACT OF LAW ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MARKET OF BIOMASS AS A FUEL" was introduced to the project "Advanced coal technologies",. This case study presents connections between the pro-ecological policy pursued at the EU and the national levels with the renewable energy market in Poland, from the commencement of this market until 2016. Special attention has been paid to the biomass market. The article presents the procedure proposed by the author to draw up a technical case, instructions how to prepare it and how to make it clear to students, as well as discusses problems when writing a case. Teaching using case studies seems to be one of the most effective methods of knowledge transmitting but implementing this solution in other areas of science can be very difficult due to the nature and degree of complexity and data availability.
