Consensus conference on foam sclerotherapy at the 2nd International European Symposium on Sclerotherapy (April 4-6, 2003, Tegernsee, Germany)

Objective: Sclerotherapy with foam of detergent sclerosing agents, which have long been recognised as very effective and safe in classical liquid (CLS) sclerotherapy, has led to a renaissance for sclerotherapy. European experts in foam sclerotherapy (FS) discussed their views and experience in preparation for publishing opinions and recommendations. Methods: Those delegates who had published results or participated in clinical studies or contributed in any other way to the further development of self-made sclerosing foam were sent a questionnaire on FS. Consensus opinions and recommendations were drawn up on the basis of the data provided by the questionnaires. These were then revised and/or endorsed by the delegates at consensus meetings. Results: Foam sclerotherapy is a suitable method for treating varices in the legs. The sclerosing foam used by the sclerotherapy experts is generally more effective than liquid sclerosing agents. Most of the recommendations for classical CLS also apply for FS. However, there are differences. Conclusion: Foam sclerotherapy is an interesting variation of an already firmly established treatment method which clearly improves the management and treatment of varicose veins. The European experts harmonised their views. This concluding report reflects their opinions regarding defined principles for the safe, effective and practical application of sclerosing foam.
