Advances in gastrointestinal endoscopic techniques

Newer endoscopic techniques are being described at an increasing rate. It is important for surgeons to remain active in endoscopy and to participate in the development and evaluation of newer techniques. Newer diagnostic options include chromoscopy, which uses dyes; narrow band imaging and magnification endoscopy to assist in identifying lesions and guide biopsy or therapy; and colonic marking with tattoos or clipping. Colonic marking techniques are used frequently in current practice, whereas the other diagnostic options are mainly research tools. Therapeutic options include dilatation and colonic stents, advanced polypectomy techniques, lasers, and control of bleeding. With appropriate patient selection, these options are being offered with increased frequency.
