Disclinations and bumps in nematic liquid crystals

摘要：
Disclinations are line singularities often encountered in liquid crystals. The nematic phase indeed owes its name to the appearence of these defects. Here we illustrate by example the intuitive idea that a disclination enforced on a wall by the boundary conditions magi relax into a bump in the free surface when the bounding wall is removed.
