Recent results from the NA49 experiment on Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon

Baryon stopping and transverse energy production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon lead to an estimate of the energy density of 2-3 GeV/fm(3). Multiplicities of strange particles as compared to negatively charged hadrons are higher in heavy ion collisions than in p+p and p+A reactions. Single particle momentum spectra and two particle correlations suggest a rather low temperature (120 MeV) at thermal freeze-out for central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon. The matter at freeze-out shows an almost boost-invariant strong longitudinal expansion. The k(perpendicular to) dependence of the transverse radius parameter together with the inverse slopes of the transverse mass spectra indicate significant transverse flow.
