摘要：
As the age of printed encyclopedias comes to an end, this article explores the practice of defining "religion" in common and specialized encyclopedias in the German language. The analysis shows that the basic elements of most definitions - etymology, typologies of religion, the statistical/geographical distribution of traditions - imply highly normative aspects. Considering encyclopedias as mirrors of the (social) world we finally argue to overcome the static definitions of the past in favour of more dynamic, relational perspectives.
