Working as an Ergonomist in industry can involve using a variety of assessment tools. Two case studies are explored to illustrate problems encountered when using tools for two very different purposes: expert witness work and assessing fairground rides. In the first example, RULA (Rapid Upper Limb Assessment), the Manual Handling Operations Regulations, and the Manual Handling Assessment Charts (MAC) are all discussed. The second case study looks at tools for assessing restraints in fairground rides. This example looks at the Health & Safety Executive's recommended method and available anthropometric data. The paper concludes that whilst there are many good assessment tools, these are often limited in their use in situations where there are very strict time and resource restraints.
