Power-aware Optimization Modeling for Cost-Effective LRPON Infrastructure Deployment

Passive Optical Network (PON) with cascaded optical amplifier (OA) and splitter has been reported as a promising strategy to support low-cost deployment of long-reach Passive Optical Networks (LRPONs), which is one of the keys to enable a fiber to the premises (FTTP) service provisioning scenario. This paper investigates a challenging network planning and dimensioning (NPD) task, where proper optical link budget planning and correlated optimal splitters/OAs placement are jointly considered under cascaded OAs and splitters. Different with previous PON-related research which mostly focus only on the splitter placement in PON, we investigate the power-aware LRPON layout planning and dimensioning in order to maintain PON cost-effective competitiveness and to effectively mitigate the impacts of various LRPON optical link degradation factors (including fiber attenuation, optical losses in Network Elements (NEs) amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in OAs, etc.) on network performance. To accomplish this goal, we propose an integer linear programming (ILP) model by concerning multiple design parameters into a single optimization framework, including the cascaded LRPON topology, NEs specification, NEs placement, fiber cabling connections, etc. Numerical experiments validate and demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed power-aware optimization model. Moreover, results show the benefits in terms of reduced cost per user for large scale LRPON, which further illustrates the cost-effectiveness of LRPON infrastructure deployment to support the rapid growth of future FTTP service.
