摘要：
To realize the vision of intelligent vehicles on intelligent roads, the European automotive industry founded a new research program called PROMETHEUS (Program for a European Traffic with Highest Efficiency and Unprecedented Safety). In contrast to the IVHS activities in the US, the emphasis of this program was to let automotive manufacturers, part suppliers and research institutions investigate the use of information technologies for automobiles in general, without a particular emphasis on automated highway systems. The automotive application of information technologies is at an advanced stage in Europe.
