摘要：
The last two decades have seen radical improvements in the cost and performance of transmission and switching in telecommunications. To most customers, these changes were only indirectly visible. The next decade will see equally radical developments in things directly tangible to customers - the telephone re-born. After describing historical milestones, this paper debates the future of telephony and reviews the cultural impact of the potential changes.
