New York: The royal colony

New York was a major administrative and diplomatic center of the eighteenth-century British Empire. It resonated with the marching feet of British soldiers and cannon salutes from men-of-war in the harbor. This essays, an expanded version of the Alexander C. Flick Lecture delivered at the New York State History Conference in June 2000, vividly recalls the royalist and imperial climate of early New York politics and society.
