Enguerrand Lascols: In Search of New Models for the Louvre: Rene Huyghe's Voyage in the Museums

Between 1932 and 1934, Rene Huyghe was given a mission of international museography by Jean Mistier and David David-Weill. It was within this framework that he visited the largest museums in Europe, in the Soviet Union and in the United States. While the Louvre was in full restructuration because of the Verne Plan, the young assistant curator went in search of new models in order to modernize the "old museum." Using the archives of this mission, the present article retraces the itinerary of this voyage in the museums in order to capture the principal stopovers. The stay in the Soviet Union in 1932 and the one in the United States in 1934 were the most documented and the main ideas that Rene Huyghe was able to draw from each of these visits is analyzed so as to put them into perspective with his "ideal museum," that he exhibited in 1937 at the Universal Exhibition.
