Reliability analysis of wind load for long-span bridges

Korean bridge engineers started to adopt the limit state design for developing the design guidelines for long-span bridges based on reliability. This paper introduces the wind load factor in wind load combinations as a part of the reliability-based design guidelines. The pylon of the bridge is mainly targeted because the maximum wind load is occurred at the lower part of pylon. Based on probability models of wind load and resistance, the reliability index of as-is bridges and guaranteed by design codes are analyzed for determining the target reliability index. At last, the wind load factor of 1.90 is recommended for satisfying the target reliability index.
