Severe food allergies in children

The purpose of this review is to describe the main severity factors in food allergies, whether occurring naturally or following presentation of the allergen to an area of atopy in children, and whether or not associated with cofactors likely to promote severe allergic reaction. Severity phenotypes associated with the individual and/or allergens are described. A good knowledge of these severity factors enables personalised treatment to be given, together with patient education to secure improved quality of life in this population at high risk for anaphylaxis, as well as allowing therapy to be proposed in certain cases.
