Tumors of the uterus in swine. Case report and review of the literature

Objective: Presentation of clinical signs, therapy and pathological findings of a pig with endometrial adenocarcinoma. Material and methods: Case report of a 15-year-old pot-bellied pig. Results: The sow displayed vaginal bleeding but a good general condition. Following unsuccessful treatment of endometritis a laparoscopy revealed a mass of the uterus. An ovariohysterectomy was performed. Histological and immunhistological examination of the mass led to the diagnosis of an endometrial adenocarcinoma. The tumor completely filled the lumen of the uterus and invaded lymph vessels. Clinical relevance: Uterine neoplasias are rare in swine. Endometrial adenocarcinomas in swine have only been described six times in 100 years. Especially in pigs that are kept as companion animals and whose mean life span is longer these tumours should be considered as a differential diagnosis when vaginal bleeding occurs.
