The Pinus massoniana forest ecosystem is one of the most important coniferous ecosystems in China. In order to construct scientifically rational indicator system of P. massoniana forest health, and resolve the problem of early diagnosing of P massoniana forest health in Chinese. It was based on the guidance of the principles of the forest health assessment indicator system, and a forest health assessment indicator system for the P massoniana forest was proposed with the forest productivity, diversity, vigour, conservation, and also made a case study in P massoniana forests in Liuyang city, Hunan province of China. The results proved that the indicator system can objectively reflect the health condition of P massoniana forest. It is scientific, objective, maneuverable and has a certain value to impel the relative researches in assessing the forest ecosystem health of P massoniana forest ecosystem in China. Also the health levels of P massoniana forest can be quantified with health index(HI), for example health, sub-health and weak forest respectively mean HI >= 0.60, 0.60>HI >= 0.40, HI<0.40. The research results have important significance for health evaluation of P massoniana forest and its early diagnosing.
