Correcting AVHRR derived sea surface temperatures for the effects of atmospheric aerosols

摘要
This paper describes the initial development of an aerosol correction algorithm for sea surface temperature from AVHRR. Our approach is to utilize the AVHRR Pathfinder Atmosphere (PATMOS) daily gridded radiance and aerosol optical depth data sets (1981-present) to provide an empirical correction for aerosol attenuation. Buoy measurements from the Pathfinder Oceans 1985-1998 matchup database are merged with the satellite gridded data. The merged data set will yield daytime equations applicable to operational and retrospective AVHRR data collected since its inception. Results from initial efforts to remove the effects of the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo aerosol bias are presented.
