摘要
State-of-the-art production buffers are a dynamic part of a coordinated material dow system that functions as a production and/or service resource rather than as a storage facility. Buffers should operate in a minimum space, guarantee movement of specified goods at the right time to the right place, and function with minimum human involvement. In paper roll handling operations, buffers that incorporate dynamic flow-through systems provide opportunities to increase profitability by better utilizing space, by combining and optimizing functions to increase supply chain control and reduce potential for product damage, and by reducing the number of personnel needed to operate the system. This presentation compares manual and automated material handling in the paper industry. It specifically contrasts typically used roll sorters and associated manual operations with that of dynamic flow-through systems, which are based on simple structure and controlled movements. As a rub, rolls coming out from roll slitting and packaging lines represent multiple orders. To complete individual orders, these rolls must go through a sorting process. Dynamic systems not only sort, they add material movement, controlled storage, and order staging functions. A savings analysis supports the advantages of automated technology being used in place of conventional roll handling practices.
