Changes of OH- bands induced by laser irradiation in LiNbO3:Fe single crystals

By FTIR spectroscopy in undoped and Fe-doped LiNbO3 single crystals of same origin and different histories it was found that laser irradiations in Fe-doped crystals cause the appearance of an OH- band at similar to3507 cm(-1). This band is assumed to be caused by the formation of Fe2+ (Li)-OH-Fe3+ (Nb) complexes via proton migration. This process precedes the microscopic structural laser-damages studied earlier.
