This payer explains Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company's risk management approach to pipeline rehabilitation projects. Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company (Tennessee) has over 26,000 kilometers (km) of transmission pipeline. Tennessee became an El Paso Energy Company in 1997. The historical background of Tennessee's rehabilitation projects, the evolution of project selection, project scopes and results of the projects during the last three decades will be discussed. The most significant contribution to the effectiveness of the rehabilitation projects was the development of the magnetic flux inspection tool (intelligent pig). Project scopes, which incorporated these inspection tools, included major modifications of pipeline facilities to accommodate these tools. This payer includes: an introduction of how, why, and when rehabilitation projects began, how projects were selected, how project scopes have changed to incorporate new technology, a case study of a 1998 rehabilitation project.
