Action frames of environmental organisations in post-Soviet St Petersburg

This research examines collective action frames of environmental organisations acting in St Petersburg, Russia. By studying diagnostic, prognostic and motivational framings of the organisations the article evaluates the framings reflect organisations' opportunities to act and have influence. The findings of this analysis indicate that, while it is clear that the current political situation in Russia does not favour civil society-based political activity, there are possibilities to act. What is needed is a positive diagnosis and prognosis - the belief that the situation is ameliorable and that individuals and civil society organisations can contribute to making political change.
