Structural study of quasicrystallization in Zr-Pd and Zr-Pt binary glassy alloys

Local atomic structures of a Zr70Pd30 alloy in glassy (as-quenched) and quasicrystalline (annealed at 740K) phases and a Zr80Pt20 alloy in an as-quenched quasicrystalline phase have been examined by the anomalous X-ray scattering (AXS) method. It is found that the coordination numbers around Zr in both glassy and quasicrystalline phases for Zr70Pd30 alloy are almost equal to 12, suggesting that an icosahedral local atomic structure around Zr exists in these phases. In the quasicrystallization process, rearrangement of atomic configurations occurs by substituting Zr atom with Pd atom around Zr. In the case of as-quenched quasicrystalline Zr80Pt20 alloy, the value around Pt is almost equal to 12 and hence an icosahedral local atomic structure is formed around Pt. This kind of short range ordering might lead to form the isosahedral clusters so as to stabilize the quasicrystalline phase.
