In Autobiografia di uno spettatore (1974) Calvino describes his relationship with cinema. What draws him towards cinema is the need for distance, that same need that motivates much of his writing. The love for what is faraway goes to explain Calvino's dislike for dubbing or for films that attempt to mimic reality, together with his disappointment upon realizing that cinema has sadly become, in its maturity, a "cinema of absolute proximity".
