Shared Decision-Making

Shared decision-making (SDM) is a process whereby patients and their health care providers collaborate on medical decisions, with patients being full participants in the process and actively involved in decisions related to their care (Resnicow et al., 2022). SDM has long been rec-ommended for all patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), with the caveat that patients may decline treatment options recommended by their providers, and providers are not bound to provide a treatment they believe is not justified, even if a patient wants it (Galla, 2000; Moss, 2010). SDM increases patient engagement and enables patients to make medical deci-sions in accord with their values and preferences; howev-er, nephrologists often find it difficult to utilize SDM with their older patients with regard to the initiation of dialysis (Frazier et al., 2022).
