The influence of Eurasian snow cover on Northern Hemisphere climate variability

摘要
Numerical and observational evidence will be presented demonstrating dynamic interactions and feedbacks between the extent of multi-seasonal snow cover and the characteristics of wintertime circulation anomalies over mid-high latitudes. The cooling effect of Eurasian snow cover results in a strengthened and more expansive Siberian high with more frequent, topographically constrained intrusions of Arctic air west and north. Early-season snow cover variability results in altered general circulation patterns consistent with the dominant mode of winter variability observed in the Northern Hemisphere. The implications of the surface-atmosphere coupling for seasonal predictability will also be discussed.
