NF-κB-regulated gene expression inflammatory bowel disease

Target gene products of the NF-kappa cB/Rel transcription factor family such as cytokines, chemokines and adhesion molecules play on important role in the regulation of the intestinal immune system. Dysregulation of the NF-kappa B/Rel system and the increase of related genes in cells of the intestinal mucosa, is involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). A number of drugs used in the treatment of IBD has been shown to inhibit NF-kappa B activation. A more specific modulation of this system could lead to more effective therapy with fewer side effects.
