Correction of hip and kyphotic spine deformity in a patient with severe ankylosing spondylitis

A severe case of flexion deformity involving the spine and hips, due to ankylosing spondylitis is presented. The treatment protocol employed to correct the 180 degrees deformity was staged bilateral total hip arthroplasty, followed by a single level spinal osteotomy at the lumbar spine. The unique features of this case are the severity of preoperative deformity and the magnitude of the spinal deformity corrected at one level without any complications. Post-operative deformity correction was maintained without internal fixation, which is important for underdeveloped countries where not all technical facilities are routinely available.
