Barriers exist in low-and middle-income countries to implementing affordable tobacco-cessation initiatives such as advice from health-care professionals, text messages and cheap pharmacotherapy. Using lower-level health-care workers for cessation support, integrating cessation into health-care programmes, subsidizing pharmacotherapy and collaborating with international stakeholders to disseminate text messages could overcome these barriers.
