War in Peace Time: Army and Colonial (Dis) Order in the British Empire

In article influence of the ideological bases of the Versailles peace on maintenance of colonial order in the British Empire during the interwar period is considered. Special attention is paid to role of law enforcement agencies (army, police, intelligence) in maintenance in the light of widely adopted ideas of the nations' right for self-determination in destabilization of a political situation in colonies and dependent territories. In focus of the problem there are the views of Major-General Sir Charles William Gwynn presented in the work most known in military circles during the era of the Interbellum, devoted to maintenance of colonial order by means of the army, "Imperial Policing", which had been representing the evolution of theory of the armed forces' use in the colonies from practice of small wars of prewar time to counterinsurgency of the second half of the 20th century
