Four different pitches were analysed. After the QI removal, the pitches were heated (with 1degreesC/min heating rate) in air absence until 550degreesC The coke yield (between 350degreesC and 550degreesC) was calculated and cokes were microscopically analysed. Two pitches have developed a mesophase stage at 470degreesC. Both two mesophase pitches were analysed and the results confirm that these pitches really have the properties of mesophase. It is also presented the relationship between the characteristics of purified pitch and its ability to give mesophase pitch.
