Assessment of Skyline Variability for Positioning in Urban Canyons

摘要
A positioning concept based on the visible skyline (i.e., the observed outline of the sky) at a particular point is proposed. A 3D building model is used to compute ideal (error-free) skylines and the spatial correlation of the computed skylines is computed as a function of point separation. The effect field of view is also considered. Results suggest that positioning capability is not uniform in an urban environment but correlation distances can reach as low as 10 m at the 90th percentile.
