This paper describes the management and execution of an Interdisciplinary Engineering Design Project (IEDP) undertaken by over 400 Engineering students at the University of Hertfordshire. The current IEDP course has been extensively developed since its introduction in 1989 and has now become a key feature of all second-year B.Eng degree programmes. The educational objectives and assessment methods of the course are outlined. The involvement of our four Royal Academy of Engineering, Visiting Professors (VPs) of Engineering Design is also discussed. External funding from the Royal Academy is currently being used to enhance the profile of Engineering Design at the University. Mention is also made of plans to produce web-based support materials for future course delivery.
