Treatment of double gallbladder: A case report and review of the literature

Background: Double gallbladder is rare anomaly of the biliary tract. It can cause severe complications if not recognized preoperatively or during operation. Laparoscopic management of double gallbladder originating from the left hepatic duct was previously reported only once in the literature. Case Report: The case of a patient who required repeat laparoscopic cholecystectomy because of second symptomatic gallbladder is reported. An accessory gallbladder with gallstones was confirmed on preoperative ultrasound, magnetic resonance and endoscopic retrograde cholangiograms. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy with cholangiography was successfully performed. Conclusions: The types of gallbladder anomalies, the concomitant pathology, and the double gallbladder treatment options are discussed. Overlooking an accessory gallbladder can result in recurrent symptoms postoperatively, necessitating further surgery. Detailed preoperative and intraoperative investigations of bile ducts are required for successful laparoscopic removal of the second gallbladder.
