Acoustic emission from impact damage in cross-ply composites

This paper is concerned with the characterization of low energy impact damage in structural composites. Two cross-ply graphite epoxy composites, AS4/3502 and toughened IM7/8551-7, with stacking sequence [0/90](8s) were subjected to impact tests with hemispherical tups at different impact velocities. The time history of the contact force and the acoustic emission signals emanating from the impact were recorded for each energy level. The extent of the damage in each case was characterized by means of a conventional ultrasonic C-scan as well as a laser-based ultrasonic system. The toughened IM7/8551-7 composites were found to be significantly more damage tolerant than AS4/3502. The acoustic emission signals are shown to carry important information regarding the nature of the impact process that can in principle be extracted from careful analysis of the signals in real time.
