Three years of mapping irrigation water in the Flumen irrigation district, Spain

A methodology to estimate and map irrigation water volumes is presented. The information used was: (i) crop maps obtained by supervised classification of satellite images; (ii) net water requirements obtained by FAO method from meteorological data; (iii) soil maps; and (iv) irrigation efficiency values. From these data we obtained several graphical and numerical documents related to irrigation water in 1993, 1994 and 1996 in the Flumen district (Spain). After our estimations in the three studied years, the irrigation patterns were quite stable both in the whole irrigated district and by morphopedological unit. The method can be applied in other irrigated areas and will be useful for agricultural and environmental management.
