Islamic Revivalism and State Failure in Kyrgyzstan

Many are quick to see Islamic revivalism as a threat, but close examination suggests that the turn to Muslim institutions can be a way of coping with an increasingly ineffective central state. The author uses survey data from Kyrgyzstan to assess competing theories of Islamic revivalism from Pashid, Cohen, Chaudet, Huntington, Kepel, and Khalid.
