This article is devoted to the 80th anniversary of the Kurnakov Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences, and presents a brief history of its development from the foundation day to the present day and a review of the Institute's main research areas. The contribution is characterized that was made by the Institute's staff to chemical science and technology.
