Crime proofing of products: The idea and the substance

The principle of crime-proofing products is well established. However, when consumers not businesses are the victims, manufacturers have often been reluctant to act. Businesses have modified hundreds of products to prevent crime. Contrary to expectations, only a few of these modified products prevented crime. Addressing this concern, manufacturers are calling on governments to get involved. In Europe, researchers and the government are working together to develop a strategy for taking crime proofing forward. In the U.S., there is very little sign of government or industry taking interest in crime proofing of products.
