Results of ecotoxicological studies aim at estimating the potential risk of chemicals. Generally, results from one or more acute or chronic studies are available. By means of assessment factors, which have been agreed upon in the EU, safe environmental concentrations (PNEC) can be calculated. These assessment factors have been laid down on the basis of experience, taking into account the precautionary principle. This paper presents the results of long term studies of anionic, nonionic, and amphoteric surfactants. The studies were carried out within the framework of a TEGEWA project, employing four different species. Taking into consideration acute and mesocosm data, the results enable the critical evaluation of the EU assessment factors used in the official risk assessment procedures to be carried out.
