Stratospheric system for measurements of the magnetic induction gradient

摘要
An aerostat-borne system intended for measurements of the Earth's magnetic field gradient at stratospheric altitudes is described. The system is mounted onto the main suspension of the aerostat and comprises three proton magnetometers (equally spaced within a 4-km vertical interval) and a GPS navigation receiver Linked to a data recorder with an independent power supply. The system develops automatically after the aerostat is launched and reaches an altitude of 2 km. The measuring system allows us to obtain principally new information about the Earth's magnetic field, in particular the characteristics of attenuation of the magnetic field in the stratosphere.
