Cross-cultural comparisons of birthing: Psycho-social issues in western and African birth

Notwithstanding the difficulties involved in cross-cultural comparisons, some observations of South African birth customs as opposed to other ''Western'' systems of care during pregnancy and birth are discussed. In addition the impact of current movements in South Africa, such as from rural to urban settings, as well as the tendency to romanticize traditional birth are highlighted.
