An evaluation of the methods used for estimating the fatigue lives of compact components

摘要
The airframes of high performance aircraft contain many highly loaded components. The fatigue certification of such components presents special problems since they are generally inaccessible For inspection and must be withdrawn from service at a sufficiently low proportion of their mean fatigue life to allow for the effects of scatter. In essence three different methods are used for estimating this mean life: the stress-life method, strain-life method and the damage-tolerence approach. This paper draws together contributions from the Defence Research Agency and British Aerospace to make a comparison of the effectiveness of these methods in estimating the fatigue lives of structural joints under loading representative of fatigue-critical locations on combat aeroplanes.
