摘要：
The Svalbard archipelago is located between 74degrees and 81degrees North and 10degrees and 35degrees East. Coal mining has been the main industry on Svalbard for the last 100 years but during the last 10 years scientific research and tourism has increased considerably. This brief summary paper gives a short introduction to the climatic and permafrost conditions on the main island Spitsbergen, presents the location of the main settlements and the prevailing permafrost engineering design approaches and finally mention ongoing and future permafrost engineering research and projects.
