Public awareness of civil engineering and the infrastructure

The approaches adopted by civil engineers to raise public awareness of the value of civil engineering and the infrastructure are discussed. The approaches developed are participating with the media, educating the adult public and children, and encouraging civil engineers to demonstrate pride in their profession. ASCE, a leader in raising public awareness presents the annual Excellence in Journalism award and provides training to members to deal effectively with the media as part of policy week activities. It is concluded that the educating students and teachers will eventually raise public awareness of civil engineering and infrastructure.
