Morphology of Barrett's esophagus and Barrett's-associated dysplasia and adenocarcinoma

Intestinalized (specialized) columnar epithelium is the histologically distinctive hallmark of Barrett's esophagus. The precursor lesion of adenocarcinoma in Barrett's esophagus is epithelial cell dysplasia, which can be divided into low-grade and high-grade lesions, the latter having a close association with malignancy. Brush cytology of Barrett's esophagus is a useful technique, when used in conjunction with biopsy sampling, to increase the diagnostic yield of dysplasia and malignant lesions.
