The South African mining industry has been disposing of mine residue for most of the 20th century. Over the years a certain degree of research and theoretical substantiation of techniques has been developed alongside the extensive practical experience gained in the field. Various design guides have been produced and various legislative Acts and regulations make direct or indirect reference to mine residue. However, there has never been one document that encompasses the whole spectrum of mine residue disposal. The SABS Code of Practice for Mine Residue Disposal sets out to provide a guideline of objectives and good practice principles. This is perhaps unique in that the Code specifically addresses the issue from the point of view of mine residue disposal. The paper provides an overview of the contents of the Code and its objectives.
