摘要
This paper aims at discussing the relationship between social community and speech community of Java specifically social and speech community observed of Central Java Indonesia. Observational and documents study methods were executed to provide the data. Recorded of spoken data was then converted and transcribed into written form. The data of documents, a Javanese novel and Javanese translation of Holly Quran, were re-transcribed according to the use of speech levels. The social community observed could not be separated from its social stratification: low and high classes. The existence of the speech community of Java could be specifically identified by their language speech levels: ngoko 'low' and krama 'high' speech levels co-exist in the language of Java. The finding showed that the members of a social community observed practices three social relationships: equality, deference, and inequality implemented in three communication patterns of use of speech levels of the language of Java reflected as a speech community. It could be concluded that the social relation between or among the members of a social community observed determines and influences the use of speech levels of the language of Java.
