Optimization of a multi-stage transmission mechanism

This work describes a method for optimizing the class of multi-stage transmission mechanisms. The problem formulation is a complex one and deals with continuous as well as discrete variables. First, the problem is expressed at a local level for one stage, including gear dimensioning with both contact stress and bending stress,criteria. Then, the global problem is constructed and ensures global coherence of mechanism. Solving is achieved through a method using evolutionary strategies. An example of a three-stage speed reducer is provided and significantly optimized. This general method proved to be very robust and efficient for gears and is extendable to a wider category of transmission mechanisms.
