Scanning with magnetoresistive sensors for subsurface corrosion

摘要：
I present examples of scans of various corrosion standards and an airliner sample using the new high performance magentoresistive (MR) sensors. These sensors are more sensitive than the standard pick up coils, and can operate at lower frequencies, thus permitting deeper penetration. Examples of scans using a single sensor, and an 8-element array are shown and discussed. I also describe the configuration of the sensors and the means of excitation the induced eddy currents, and discuss the various ways in which these sensitive devices can be exploited for use in non-destructive evaluation (NDE).
