Perceived distress in university counseling center clients across a six-year period

Recently, Sharkin (1997) suggested that "counseling center practitioners have been expressing a sense of urgency about increasing numbers of students who present with serious psychological problems as well as an overall increase in the severity of presenting problems" (p. 275). A review by Stone and Archer (1990) described this trend as an important challenge for college counseling centers in the 1990s.
